CYBER BACKpack ~ emails in a bottle

My first response to the [CYBER BACKpack] again I was rescued by a Hixter who travels the World. Kristi H wrote 9/13/2004:

Hi Wayne,

Wow this was a fun site to cruise - just a Hixter fan - but to the see photos of Kathmandu from 1972 was deja vu! I'm an old cowhand from Oregon who ventured to Europe with my sister in 1973. After buying a VW van and cruising mostly Spain and Morocco for 8 months, we sold it and ventured east. From Istanbul we took that incredible steam engine train [that loaded onto the ferry at Lake Van for the all night passage] and then into Tehran. After several weeks there we took local buses to the Afghani border. It took about 8 hours to get through customs because they were so blissfully stoned and finally arrived in Herat late at night. It was a travel back 1000 years in time and my first encounter with bedbugs. Spent a month in Kabul - the highlight was a trip to Bamyian to see the Buddha's. Then, sick with amoebic dysentery, we flew to New Delhi. Time and money running out, and India too immense to figure out, we headed to Nepal for a month.

I ran into a friend of mine from high school, Tory Larson, who had started a bar in Kathmandu called, I think, the Rose Mushroom? We stayed with her for a bit and had foods we hadn't seen in a year…peanut butter, raisins, etc. I bought a z-stone necklace that I treasure and still wear to this day. My sister ending up getting Hepatitis A and we headed home for her to recoup, but a year had gone by and we were ready. In the last 30 years I have been able to continue traveling to amazing places all over the world - but that trip has many good memories. Those 'crazy free love days' were the best - and I think it was my grounding for a very happy life. By the way, the South of Morocco rocks!!
